From Tiny Tapestries to Museum Collections: Young Ambassadors in Action

October 8, 2026

This piece is by Khadijah Ali, the Lead Museum Young Ambassador for Bradford District Museums and Galleries.

On Sunday, BDMG young ambassadors led and co-produced the DNA Tiny Tapestries workshop with 43 attendees at Cliffe Castle Museum in Keighley. With artist Donna Templeman we created 58 pieces of textile art. Thank you Keighley!

The Tapestry workshop was so fun and creative! We were able to collect many different postcodes from the people who participated in creating their own loom. Please come visit our exhibition at Bradford Industrial Museum from the 5th of December 2026 to the 21st of February 2027 to see all these looms put together into a beautiful tapestry – as well as our 3D DNA structure and mini museum!

This past Wednesday marked my last week as a volunteer supporting the Collections and Curatorial team of Bradford Museums with an audit and documentation project based at the museum’s external stores over the summer months. The Collections team works extremely hard across all four Bradford District Museums & Galleries sites, and this work contributed to the service’s strategic aims to improve the condition, documentation, and accessibility of stored collections.

One of the many fascinating objects uncovered during a collections audit: a commemorative ribbon for Bradford Hospital’s “Lady of the Lamp Day”.

Through this work, I have gained so much insight into how museums manage and improve stored collections, training in documentation and the collections management system, as well as the handling of museum objects.

While auditing various objects, we found so many interesting pieces donated to Bradford Museums showcasing the city’s long history and evolution. I greatly enjoyed the experience of getting to work in a practical, hands-on environment with the collections team and explore the heritage and history of the museums archive.
