Bradford Museums & Galleries has been awarded the prestigious Sandford Award for Heritage Learning 2026, recognising the outstanding quality of its educational programmes and learning experiences for children and young people.
The award is one of the heritage sector’s most respected accolades, celebrating excellence in heritage education.
An independent assessment concluded that the museum service’s learning provision deserves the Sandford Award. It highlighted the strength of its curriculum-linked workshops, community engagement and commitment to inspiring young learners across the Bradford district.
Anita Fox, Lead Assessor at the Heritage Education Trust, said:
“Learning offers are engaging and provide clear curriculum links for exciting themes linked to life in the Industrial Revolution and beyond, such as transport, washday, Victorian schools, World War Two Bradford and a History of Roman Bradford workshop developed in consultation with teachers.
“The ‘Pupil Takeover’ career-focussed session is aspirational and provides historical context whilst encouraging the development of skills and confidence.
“The exhibitions and interactive workshops inspire pupils and enhance learning. Learning team members are dedicated and skilled in supporting teachers to ensure a high-quality learning experience for their pupils.”
The Sandford Award assessment recognised the museum service’s contribution to helping pupils understand Bradford’s local heritage through workshops covering subjects such as transport, Victorian life, textiles, World War Two Bradford and Roman Bradford.
Assessors also commended the team’s commitment to consultation with schools, inclusive practice and continuous improvement.
The award will be presented at a ceremony at Kensington Palace on Tuesday 17 November 2026.
About the Sandford Award
The Sandford Award for Heritage Learning is administered by the Heritage Education Trust in partnership with Lincoln Bishop University. It recognises high-quality learning provision at museums, heritage sites and cultural organisations across the UK.
The award was formally ratified by the Trustees of the Heritage Education Trust in September 2026.
