About this event

5 September 2024 10:30 am – 5 September 2024 3:00 pm

Our Responses to Art workshop in September will take ideas from the exhibition ‘Where it Began’ by Osman Yousefzada. The artist tells his stories in a range of textile pieces; bold figures on large canvas tapestries, collections of wrapped objects and sculptures, beds and seats using cord made from recycled  fabrics.

We will begin with a tour of the exhibition, after which artist Naseem Darbey will lead participants in creating their own small scale, wrapped sculpture using heated plastics and recycled fabric. There will also be opportunities to experiment with weaving and cord making techniques similar to those used by Osman Yousefzada.

Osman Yousefzada’s works come to Bradford from his exhibition at the V&A, but also includes new work created especially for Cartwright Hall Art Gallery

Osman Yousefzada’s practice is inextricably linked to his formative years: a childhood experience of ‘betweens’ negotiating and moving between home and city, the female kitchen and the male front room, women and men, Britain and Pakistan

British artist Naseem Darbey will also share with us some of her recent art works telling her own stories using textiles to create her signature sculptural hollow drawings. Access Naseem’s website to appreciate how complex and serious ideas are expressed in mesmerising textile pieces.

Materials are provided but do bring plastic bags and scraps of fabric to personalise your work if you would like. Osman thinks about what objects would ‘move’ with him that he would wrap; you are welcome to bring an object which approximates to something that would also be hard to leave that you might want to wrap.

Book by phone: 01274 431212  Cost £20.00 payable on the day. Please cancel immediately if unable to attend.

Bring sandwiches or have lunch in the café.
