Before the world knew David Hockney, his story began here in Bradford.
This autumn, the David Hockney Gallery at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery will reopen, inviting visitors to return to where it all began and discover the formative years of one of Britain’s greatest artists.
Our unique collection at Bradford District Museums & Galleries offers a fascinating insight into David Hockney’s early years, focusing on the period when he was learning to draw, developing his artistic voice and creating some of his earliest work. Together, these works reveal the beginnings of an artist who would go on to become recognised around the world.
The refreshed gallery will bring new displays and interpretation, celebrating Bradford’s unique place in Hockney’s story and offering visitors the chance to discover the collection that shows where it all began.
A tribute to one of Britain’s greatest cultural figures, the gallery will also celebrate a living creative legacy, continuing to inspire new generations through Hockney’s work and story.

Cartwright Hall Art Gallery is in the middle of Lister Park, one and a half miles from the City Centre on the A650 Manningham Lane. There is limited parking in Lister Park, accessible from North Park Road (off Oak Lane). Lister Park is served by many city centre bus services including 23, 25, 26, 49, 51, 52, 53, 54, 622, 647, 662, w5. Cartwright Hall is about ten minutes’ uphill walk from Frizinghall railway station.
