Weaving in the Mill: A Material Journey

Pupils get ‘hands on’ with the basic processes by which the fleece of a sheep is turned into cloth. All pupils take on roles to complete the process, learn more about the children who worked in the mills and get to experience some of the noise and smells of the mills as they see a selection of the machines running. The workshop explores the change from a small family cottage-run industry to mass mechanisation, including how Bradford changed during the Industrial Revolution.

Alongside your Weaving in the Mill workshop you will have access to 2 boxes you can explore with your class either before or after your workshop:

• A box of handling objects relating to the lives of Victorian mill children. The box contains full instructions for 4 cross-curricular activities you can do with these objects.
• An activity box of 8 different Victorian children’s street games for children to try including hoop and stick, spinning tops, cup and ball, skittles and some weaving rhymes!
