Blog: Artist Folio: Post 2

February 3, 2014

This unique exhibition, which runs from 7 Feb to 15 June at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery presents a selection of folios from the Bradford’s print collection.

Guest curator Professor Paul Coldwell, University of the Arts, London, will be blogging during his time with us on the show. Look out for more updates!

Paul writes:

The Artists Folio, not only draws upon the wonderful collection of prints at Cartwright Hall, a real treasure trove to delve into, but also celebrates very strong Bradford connections.

Sir William Rothenstein, whose dry points of landscapes from the First World War are featured was born in Bradford in 1872 and attended Bradford Grammar School before commencing his formal art education at the Slade School of Art in London.

One of his sons, Michael, developed his father’s taste for printmaking and became one of the most important artists and advocates for printmaking during the 1950s-60s and his ground breaking book Frontiers of Printmaking (1966) is still a reference point for many students.

It is well known that David Hockney was born in Bradford and like Rothenstein attended Bradford Grammar School before Bradford College and then the Royal College of Art, where the folio A Rakes Progress was made .

Patrick Caulfield whose set of four Interiors adds an intense note of colour to the exhibition, was commissioned to design the poster for the 6th British International Print Biennale in Bradford in 1979 a copy of which is in the collection at Cartwright Hall.
