Celebrate Halloween with Hyacinths at Bradford’s Bolling Hall

Visit Bradford Council’s Bolling Hall Museum and celebrate Halloween with hyacinths at one of the district’s oldest homes. The Halloween Hyacinths event will take place on Saturday 31 October between 11am and 3pm.

The museum’s volunteer gardeners will be on hand to help visitors to plant hyacinth bulbs in a pot that they’ve decorated to take home. Halloween is said to be one of the best times to plant hyacinth bulbs.

Library volunteers will also be holding seriously spooky storytelling sessions throughout the day. Bradford Literacy Trust Museum volunteer champions with free Halloween books and there will also be free bookmarks which have been hand-printed by the print volunteers at Bradford Industrial Museum. Hop on the Bradford Stories Bus, a mobile library and storytelling space from Bradford Stories and the National Literacy Trust, grab a FREE book in the museum gardens.

A pop-up café by Ilkley’s Blooms coffee bar will serve freakishly fresh brewed coffee, hot chocolate, and teas. There will also be beastly bakes available in the museum gardens – if it’s chilly – the Cold Kitchen will be available to eat inside.

Local company Fairies Wardrobe will be on hand for little witches and warlocks face paint and favourite magical book characters will be visiting too.

Look out for the garden gazebo of magic for a photo opportunity, it will cost £3 and you will get a little token from the wood witch. (Weather dependent).

Museum young ambassadors will be helping visitors to make waxy bookmarks with natural dyes and tissue Halloween Hyacinths at the craft station in the main hall.

Meet Colonel Richard Tempest, who’s family owned Bolling Hall from the late 15th century.

It’s All Hallows’ Eve the end of the Old Year in the 17th Century. The harvest hasn’t been a good one, nothing has grown and it’s way too cold. Find out what happens to the master of the house, played by local volunteer David Schofield.

The Halloween Hyacinths event is suitable for all the family however children must be accompanied by an adult.

The event is free, but donations on a pay as you feel basis are always welcome to cover the costs of activities which are run by volunteers.

Bolling Hall is situated on Bowling Hall Road one mile south of Bradford City Centre and is signposted with heritage ‘brown signs’ from A650 Wakefield Road.

From Bradford City Centre, the 635 bus departs from bus stops City Park A on Prince’s Way, Rawson Square H on John Street, and Little Germany Y on Vicar Lane (alight at Bowling Hall Road).
