Cartwright Hall Art Gallery

Island to Island is an exhibition of photographs made over the past sixty-five years.

Taken by Tim Smith and his father Derek, these images celebrate the light, life and landscapes of the English speaking Caribbean, exploring everyday living across the region and how it has changed since the 1950s.

Work by local poets Khadijah Ibrahiim and Jane Steele complement the images, alongside fabulous Bradford Carnival costumes.
Film and people’s stories, collected by Grace Flerin, explore the links between Bradford and the Caribbean.
Photographs from Bradford’s famous Belle Vue Studio are displayed in a recreation of the Front Room, a common feature of British Caribbean homes during the 1960s and 70s. Decorated in styles popular in that era, it features items loaned by local people and drawn from the collections of Bradford Museums & Galleries, including a radiogram, a drinks trolley and ornaments such the iconic glass fish and other animals.
This exhibition is a collaboration between Tim Smith, Bradford Museums & Galleries, The Windrush Generation & Xplosion Arts, working in collaboration with the Geraldine Connor Foundation and members of Bradford’s Caribbean community.
