Bradford District Museum & Galleries

Schools Team Freelancers

Could you lead children through an archaeological dig, help them to explore their local history and culture through art or perhaps teach in costume to bring learning alive through drama?

Bradford District Museums and Galleries are looking for people to join our freelance team, delivering our wide-ranging education workshops to school-aged children (from 4-18).

We operate a busy learning and outreach service as part of Bradford District Councils Museum Service at four sites: Bolling Hall Museum, Bradford Industrial Museum, Cartwright Hall Art Gallery and Cliffe Castle Museum.  If you have a passion for using museum collections to make learning exciting, this might be the role for you.

School visits and their set up can take place between 9.00 – 15.00 on Tuesday to Friday in term time. The number of bookings we can offer is determined by the number of bookings made by schools.

You will need:

  • Experience of delivering learning activities to a range of audiences, or teaching, within a museums or education context.

Management:

  • Able to give clear instructions so that groups can carry out all activities safely.
  • Can actively deliver engaging, differentiated, accessible 1-2 hr workshops for schools to a workshop plan developed by the Learning Team, fulfilling the teaching objectives.
  • Able to manage the learning environment (learning space and resource management) for a safe and high-quality experience, including following relevant risk assessments, being aware of visitors and taking care of exhibits. Most of our workshops take place in public galleries, so you would need to feel confident in delivering in those spaces.
  • Good timekeeping skills to ensure that workshops run to time and groups have lunch at their allotted time.

Communication:

  • Able to confidently impart relevant subject information to participants, in a way that is suitable for their age.
  • Able to communicate effectively with visiting teachers, Visitor Services staff and the Bookings Support Officer.
  • Pro-active about problem-solving, knowing when to ask for help or pass information on to members of the Learning Team.

Knowledge

  • Our workshops cover a range of school curriculum areas such as history, English, art and science. We would need you to have good subject knowledge in two or more of these areas, or the ability to develop this quickly.
  • General knowledge of the National Curriculum.

If you live in Bradford District and have experience of teaching or engaging children of different ages and abilities in an education setting and are passionate about learning, friendly and reliable we would love to hear from you.

We welcome applicants who can speak community languages.

Schools freelancers are required to have public liability insurance and be willing to undertake an Enhanced DBS check. You would receive full induction to our workshops and the museums and galleries sites, together with safeguarding training. We also offer ongoing CPD for our freelance team.

You can find out more about our workshops at www.bradfordmuseums.org/learning

Renumeration available:
