Snail-Shaped Inkwell - Object of the month

Bradford Industrial Museum

December 2016

Becca McGrath, PA (Intern) to Maggie Pedley, Museums Manager has chosen this piece…

“I chose this inkwell because it was one of the first objects that I worked with when I joined Bradford Museums and Galleries as a Learning and Outreach Intern. I helped the Learning Team to create a visual timeline of objects from the service’s handling collection, to be used as a backdrop for school’s workshops in the Lecture Room at Bradford Industrial Museum.

This snail-shaped inkwell was chosen as part of a re-creation of a Victorian office for the timeline. The inkwell is made from moulded clear glass in the shape of a snail, with a cast iron stand decorated with acanthus leaves. The inkwell is both functional and aesthetically pleasing; I like the intricate details of the stand and the way that such an everyday item was crafted to be so unusual and quirky.”

We would like to wish Becca a fond farewell and many congratulations as she will be leaving us at Christmas and will be starting as Collections Assistant at York Minster in the new year.
