Weave and Spin: International Women’s Day at Bradford Industrial Museum!

FREE entry, all welcome.

Join the Weaving Gallery volunteers and members of the Bradford Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers, who have handmade knitwear for you to peruse and buy.

This IWD23, we remember the ladies (and children) in our mills, core to the textile industry. Hear the voices and memories of mill workers from the Heritage Recording Unit, Bradford Museums and Galleries, in the 1st floor gallery

Drop in, have a chat with our very friendly volunteers and try your hand at some spinning or weaving. Bask in the sounds and atmosphere of a real 1850s woollen mill and celebrate.

1 – 3pm: See the Buttercross Belles, Morris dancers who dance North West style, originating from the mill towns, using bobbins and spindles. They often represent the movement of the machinery. Their outfits are suffragette colours of green, white and purple. Female Morris groups often danced at suffragette meetings. They later struggled to be recognised in the 1970’s folk revival due to it being considered a male only tradition.

Taking us to present times: Glitter tattoos and women’s disco in the Horse Emporium – by Fairy’s Wardrobe.

Mrs Moore, the mill manager’s wife, will of course be on hand to welcome you to her home in the Mill Manager’s House. (aka visiteer, Sheila Lansdell).

Enjoy tea and cake in the mill café.
