Join Esna Su for an Artist’s Talk at Cartwright Hall
Esna Su’s piece for Cartwright Hall is part of a collection called ‘The Burden’ that Esna made in response to the experience of displacement suffered by people in her home country of Syria. The open shape of the piece reflects the shapes of the precious objects people would carry on their backs as they left home, and the bag that would contain them, hoping always for a place of safety
Esna comes from Antioch but she left for the UK in order to gain a training and also to learn English; she worked in many jobs before she got a place at Central St Martins College to study, keeping the skills in textile making learnt from her mother. In 2015 Esna created the collection ‘Burden’, she showed it to her mother who looked at the pieces and asked how they were made. Her mother said she couldn’t have made them herself which was her way of showing approval.
In this artist’s talk Esna will talk about her life as an artist and performer, and how she has navigated the two worlds of her home life in Syria and her cultural life in the UK.
